NY Lawmakers Reach Deal to Reform Public Authorities
Thursday, November 19, 2009
New York, NY –
The New York legislature still hasn't struck a budget deal, but lawmakers have reached a deal to reform the state's public authorities, such as the MTA, Lower Manhattan Development Corporation, and state Thruway Authority.
Westchester Assemblyman Richard Brodsky sponsored the measure. He says right now, bureaucrats control the state's authorities, and the changes will give the state comptroller and an independent budget office more oversight.
BRODSKY: This is not just shining more sunlight. It does that, but that's not all it does. It changes the rules of operation.
REPORTER: Lawmakers passed a public authorities reform bill months ago, but Governor Paterson and Mayor Bloomberg had some concerns. The mayor says the updated bill is sensible, and will help the authorities responsibly serve New Yorkers.
