Fans of new wave films were treated to a screening of Face, the latest film by acclaimed Taiwanese-Malaysian director Tsai Ming-Liang.
The first film to be commissioned by the Louvre for its auteur series, Face brings together on screen Francois Truffaut's companion Fanny Ardant and his longtime alter-ego Jean-Pierre Leaud. It's based on the myth of Salome, and explores the human alienation and ennui that are prevalent in all of Tsai's films. In a post-screening Q&A at the Asia Society Sunday, Tsai spoke about his experiments with the theme.
TSAI: (through translator) I think sometimes distance can be good, you need to find that distance that would not make you uncomfortable. I would use my films as a series of experiments.
A retrospective of Tsai's films co-presented by the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in New York continues through Saturday at the Asia Society. There is another Q&A with the director following tonight's screening of Vive L'Amour.
