Bloomberg Vows to Not Raise Taxes, but Layoffs May Be Likely

Tuesday, November 17, 2009

Mayor Michael Bloomberg is vowing not to raise taxes to help close a $5 billion budget deficit next fiscal year, but job cuts are a different story.

The mayor says if the unions cooperate with the city, and find ways to do more with less, layoffs could be averted.

District Council 37, the city's largest municipal union, has not returned calls for comment.

The mayor says the city expects to lose $5 billion in tax revenue next fiscal year. He's ordered agencies to make four percent cuts in their current budgets, and eight percent cuts for the fiscal year that starts next July. The education, police, and fire departments have been asked to make smaller reductions.

Agencies have until next month to submit their cost savings plans.
