Environmental Groups Press Gov on E-Waste Management

Albany lawmakers are considering legislation for the safe disposal of computers and other electronic waste. Governor Paterson hasn't yet offered his own proposal, but environmental groups are accusing him of listening only to the industry point of view. WNYC's Ilya Marritz has more.
REPORTER: Governor Paterson says addressing toxic e-waste a priority. But with four weeks left in the legislative session, environmental groups worry the Governor is hearing more from the computer industry than from them.
SINDING: I think it would be fair to say we're a little frustrated.
REPORTER: Kate Sinding is with the Natural Resources Defense Council. She says the group has had hardly any access to the Governor's staff. Industry lobbyists say they have had access. Their priority is overturning a New York City regulation requiring manufacturers to pick up discarded electronics from people's homes. That takes effect later this year.
A spokesman for the Governor says Paterson is listening to all sides, and will offer a bill that's environmentally sound and fair to industry. For WNYC, I'm Ilya Marritz.
