Comments On The DOE? Raise Your Hand!

Wednesday, May 20, 2009

As the date nears for the state legislature to decide on renewing mayoral control over public schools, city leaders are putting in their two cents. City Comptroller William Thompson - a Democrat running for mayor - released a report today titled "Powerless Parents," accusing the DOE of leaving parents out of the decision making process.

In a similar spirit, City Councilman Bill DeBlasio, who's running for public advocate, is asking the state lawmakers to ensure a new "Public School Parents' Bill of Rights" if they re-authorize mayoral control over schools.

Mayor Bloomberg opposes any effort to water down the law. He says it's led to higher test scores and greater accountability in city schools.
