Parents Protest Long Kindergarten Waiting Lists

Wednesday, May 06, 2009

The city's Education Department says kindergarten waiting lists in Manhattan should shrink by this fall, now that it's offered more than a thousand children gifted and talented slots.

But that's no comfort to Henry Sidel. He says his four year-old son is number 79 on a waiting list of 90 for two schools in Greenwich Village that are already crowded, because parents prefer them over gifted and talented programs that are far away.

SIDEL: What's at issue is a capacity problem. There's overcrowding in PS 3 and PS 41 and lots of schools around the city.

REPORTER: The DOE says more seats are coming on line next year, and it's optimistic schools can accommodate more students from the wait lists.

Parents from throughout the city have organized a rally outside City Hall today to protest overcrowding.
