"Billy Elliot" Leads Tony Nominations

Tuesday, May 05, 2009

Born to Boogie and perhaps, Born for Awards? That's the question being asked of the Broadway musical, "Billy Elliot," which leads the pack among the shows receiving a Tony Award nomination this morning. The show, a transplant from England, received 15 nods. "Next to Normal" received 11. "Shrek", and Rock of Ages are also up for Best Musical. (Nine to Five got passed over in that category.)

For Best Play, there's God of Carnage; all four of its cast members received acting nominations. Dividing the Estate, Reasons to Be Pretty, and 33 Variations are also up for Best Play. The winners will be announced June 7th at Radio City Music Hall.
