The city will soon be offering incentives to taxi fleet owners to buy more hybrid taxis. Under the new rules, owners will be able to charge drivers three dollars more per shift to rent the earth-friendly vehicles. But they'll also have to charge cabbies four dollars less for their standard Crown Victoria counterparts.
Michael Woloz of the group Metropolitan Taxicab Board of Trade, says the current hybrid models approved for use aren't reliable or roomy enough.
WOLOZ: They are very difficult to maintain, very difficult to keep on the road - add to that the fact that they are very small.
REPORTER: His group represents dozens of fleet owners. They sued the city last year when the Bloomberg administration tried to require that all taxis to get at least 25 miles per gallon.
The new lease cap rules go into effect at the end of next month.
