Mayor Bloomberg is trying to convince the state to relinquish control of Governors Island and Brooklyn Bridge Park to the city. Currently both parks are jointly funded by the city and the state, but in Governor Paterson's current fiscal budget there are no funds allocated for either parks.
Bloomberg says he will use $300 million of funds allocated for the Javits Center to pay for these parks.
Representatives for Brooklyn Bridge Park say they will be delighted to work alongside the city.
Governors Island is open from May 30 to mid-October.
