New Yorkers who download music from the internet, get haircuts, and belong to a gym have dodged potential taxes on those activities. Governor Paterson reached an agreement with state lawmakers to pull the unpopular taxes from his budget proposal, and use federal stimulus money to replace the $1.3 billion they would have raised.
We have always believed that working families are the backbone of this state, says Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver. "They need relief from the ever-rising cost of living in New York State."
Still, some $2.8 billion in OTHER new taxes and fees remain on the negotiating table. The new fiscal year starts April 1st, and the state is facing a $13 billion deficit.
