$1.5 Billion of Stimulus Expected for NYC Transportation

Wednesday, March 11, 2009

The Brooklyn Bridge, subway stations and the Fulton Street Transit Center, all appear on the latest list of local projects that could receive federal stimulus money. WNYC's Matthew Schuerman has more.

REPORTER: The list is neither complete nor final. But it gives some idea of which of the region's priorities qualify for stimulus funding. Compiled by the New York Metropolitan Transportation Council, the projects range from the mundane to the iconic.

New York City Transit would rehab a dozen subway stations on the D line in Brooklyn. The city transportation department would repair approaches to the Brooklyn Bridge, part of a larger reconstruction of the entire span. The list also includes the Fulton Street Transit Center downtown, where the MTA has already committed to spending about half of the billion dollars it expects in stimulus funds.

All told, local transportation agencies are slated to receive about a billion and a half dollars from the federal legislation. For WNYC, I'm Matthew Schuerman.
