Paterson Plays Down Popularity Poll

Tuesday, March 03, 2009

A spokesman for Governor Paterson is playing down the importance of new poll that shows a double digit drop in his popularity. The Marist College Survey shows Governor Paterson with the lowest approval rating of any New York governor in the 27-year history of the poll at just 26 percent, a 20 percentage point drop from January.

But spokesman Errol Cockfield says the governor is facing the worst deficit the state has ever seen, and he "knows that because of difficult choices and the need to reform state spending that there would be consequences."

According to the Marist poll, 77 percent of respondents say Governor Paterson is working hard, but only 39 percent think he's a good leader.
