Bloomberg Reaches Out to Borough Presidents on BOE

Tuesday, June 30, 2009

Mayor Bloomberg continues urging state senators to renew the law granting him control of city schools. But with time running out before the midnight deadline, he's also reaching out to the five borough presidents about reconstituting a board of education. Five of the board's seven members must be chosen by the borough presidents, with the remaining two by the mayor. Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer won't reveal his choice yet, but says his goal is to continue the current system.

STRINGER: I think that if we had to reconstitute the board we could do it in a way that could continue the powers of the chancellor running the day to day operations of the board.

Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz called for a reconstituted Board of Education to meet tomorrow, if necessary, to preserve continuity. Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Junior announced he will appoint former Hostos Community College President Dolores Fernandez to the board. A spokesman says Diaz won't commit to keeping Chancellor Klein.
