Koch Scheduled for Heart Surgery
Wednesday, June 17, 2009
New York, NY –
Former New York City mayor Ed Koch is scheduled to have open heart surgery within the next week. Koch suffered a heart attack 10 years ago, and a spokesman say he's in New York Presbyterian Hospital Columbia for the past two days. Mayor Bloomberg says he spoke with Koch today.
BLOOMBERG: I can tell you his spirits are excellent, and he said that he's confident in his doctors, and he's looking forward to getting out of the hospital and continuing to do what Ed Koch does the best. And that is showing the true spirit of our city.
Koch was originally scheduled to have an angioplasty, but his spokesman says doctors decided they needed to do open heart surgery to replace a valve.
