Mayor and City Council Reach Budget Deal

Mayor Bloomberg and the City Council have reached a budget deal, two weeks ahead of their June 30th deadline. WNYC's Bob Hennelly has more.
REPORTER: In the City Hall rotunda dozens of council members jockeyed to be in the budget deal photo behind Mayor Bloomberg and Speaker Quinn. Their deal kept 16 fire houses from closing, and child welfare workers on the job. But Mayor Bloomberg says in the current economic climate, there are no guarantees.
BLOOMBERG: For if our economy continues to stall we should all bare in mind adjustments to this budget will be necessary. So this may well not be the last word on this year's budget.
REPORTER: Later this week the Council will formally adopt a detailed budget. Both the Assembly and State Senate in Albany must still sign off on the City's $900 million tax revenue package. It includes a half-point sales tax hike the City needs to balance the books. For WNYC I am Bob Hennelly.
