Council Weighs School Access on Randall's Island
Tuesday, June 09, 2009
New York, NY –
The City Council's Franchise and Concession Review Committee heard testimony about a city agreement that would give some private schools more access to ball fields on Randall's Island in return for annual payments. Hunter Reed president of the District Four President's Council, thinks the agreement is unfair:
REED: If this agreement was to go forward, what you'd have is about one tenth of the population getting access to the fields instead of about ninety five percent of the children.
REPORTER: Those who support the city's agreement argue that the money from private schools will help maintain the fields for everyone and ease the burden on taxpayers.
The committee will vote on whether to approve the agreement tomorrow.
