"Summer Streets" Create Pedestrian Parks

Monday, June 08, 2009

Last year’s "Summer Streets" program will expand this year, creating temporary pedestrian parks on streets throughout the five boroughs. Transportation Commissioner Janette Sadik-Khan says it will be called "Weekend Walks" and will offer many different activities.

SADIK-KHAN: Whether you want to learn how to ride a bike, whether you want to take a cha-cha lesson, whether you want to learn how to samba, whether you want to do kick boxing – there are all sorts of ways to come out and enjoy what we’ve got on the streets of NY and see the streets of NY in a whole new way.

Last year the city shut down much of Park Ave for three Saturdays in August, and sponsored a smaller-scale version in Williamsburg, Brooklyn.

A Transportation Department spokesman says "Summer Streets" will return to Park Avenue this year, and the other locations, and the exact dates, will be announced soon.
