Report Shows Single Payer Least Costly for NYS

Supporters of a single-payer healthcare system say Governor Paterson has buried a report that finds such a system would save the state $20 billion dollars a year. Karen DeWitt reports.
REPORTER: Mark Dunlea, with Hunger Action Network, says the report released on a late Friday afternoon by the Paterson administration finds that if New York adopted a single-payer health care system, the savings would total $20 billion a year by 2019.
DUNLEA: Single payer we know works, because one, we have Medicare, which is basically the single-payer system for senior citizens primarily. And then we have all these models from around the rest of the world.
REPORTER: Governor Paterson was an advocate of the single-payer system when he was a State Senator, but lately has said little about it. The report by the Urban Institute seems to favor a public-private partnership with existing health insurance companies that it says would bring down exorbitant rates for individual health coverage plans.
