De Blasio Demands Reinstatement on Ballot

Monday, July 27, 2009

Brooklyn City Councilman Bill de Blasio joined with other elected officials to demand that the Board of Elections put him back on the ballot for public advocate. De Blasio's name was removed because of a typo in his most recent filing. Brooklyn councilwoman Letitia James says the board's rules are "anti-democratic" and discourage candidates from seeking public office.

JAMES: Rules which would deny ballot access simply because of a typo do not make sense. Rules which would deny you access because you failed to paginate do not make sense. Rules that deny you access because your petitions are of a different color do not make sense.

No comment yet from the Board of Elections. It is to meet tomorrow to discuss the issue. De Blasio says that if it doesn't reinstate him, he'll go to court.
