Mayor Dismisses Calls for Chancellor Klein to Resign
Wednesday, July 22, 2009
New York, NY –
City Comptroller Bill Thompson says School Chancellor Joel Klein is not fit to run the Department of Education and should step down.
THOMPSON: We found the DOE has engaged in sloppy and unprofessional practices that encourage cheating and data manipulation.
The Comptroller's office released an audit of Klein's management of the DOE which Thompson says includes poor fiscal choices and shows a failure to work with parents. He also says the audit suggests inflated graduation rates and potential test-score manipulation.
But Mayor Bloomberg says the schools chancellor has his full support.
BLOOMBERG: Joel Klein has done what he's supposed to do - make the very tough decisions. That's never popular.
Comptroller Thompson is Mayor Bloomberg's main challenger in the mayoral race. Thompson says he's been a critic of Klein's for a while, and that his recent audit on graduation rates convinced him Klein should step down.
