State Senate Fails to Pass E-Waste Bill

Albany lawmakers came close, but ultimately failed to pass an e-waste bill, requiring manufacturers to dispose of consumer electronics. WNYC's Ilya Marritz has more.
REPORTER: Many states already have e-waste laws, and passing one in New York was considered enough of a priority that it made it onto the senate's special session docket. But late in the game, Long Island based Canon, which makes photocopiers, raised objections. They said other businesses, not the manufacturers, should pay the cost of pickup and recycling. Republican Senator Carl Marcellino says the e-waste bill should be changed to accommodate New York based-companies like Canon.
MARCELLINO: So that these companies stay where they are and we don't lose jobs in New York State.
REPORTER: Senators say they'll try again to pass an e-waste law later this year. Meanwhile, New York City's e-waste law takes effect at the end of the month.
