Comptroller Puzzels Over Competing Payroll Statements

Thursday, July 09, 2009

State Controller Thomas DiNapoli is withholding pay from Senators in Albany until the stalemate is resolved. He says it's because he's getting competing payroll statements from Democrats and Republicans.

REPORTER: He says there will be no pay for Senators until courts sort the issue out. A hearing on the payroll issue is scheduled for tomorrow morning in Albany .

As the stalemate drags on, DiNapoli says state's coffers are suffering.

DINAPOLI: I don't want to say Albany is going to be like Sacramento, fortunately were not as bad as California, but we've been saying all along that this budget was put together with a tremendous amount of hope that the economy would recover quickly, that's obviously not happening.

REPORTER: DiNapoli says revenues for April were down 40 percent and May projections were down 30 percent from last year.
