Reconstituted Board of Ed Keeps Klein as Chancellor

Wednesday, July 01, 2009

In its first action since being formed early this morning, New York City's newly-reconsituted Board of Education voted unanimously to keep Joel Klein as chancellor.

REPORTER: Mayor Bloomberg and the city's five borough presidents met early this morning to appoint members to the board, after state senators allowed the mayoral control law to expire at midnight.

BLOOMBERG: As prudent as its actions today have been, bear this in mind; these are band aids, not solutions. now we have to keep pressure on the state senate to act.

REPORTER: The board also passed a resolution urging the Senate to renew mayoral control. The board member from the Bronx, Dolores Fernandez, abstained, saying she wanted the Senate to be able to debate the measure. Some Senate Democrats want to change the bill to give parents more of a say in school affairs.

Governor Paterson has called another special session for the feuding state senate for today. Mayoral control is on the agenda.
