Now that the law establishing Mayor Bloomberg's control over city schools has expired, the first meeting of the new Board of Education is expected to take place today. The seven-member board includes five appointed by the borough presidents. WNYC's Beth Fertig reports.
REPORTER: Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz was the first to pick a board member. He selected Dr. Dolores Fernandez, a former president of Hostos Community College and a professor at CUNY's graduate center.
Diaz has been critical of some of Chancellor Klein's policies and he won't say whether his new board member will vote to keep Klein running the schools.But Mayor Bloomberg has said Klein's contract allows him to stay. And the other borough presidents seem committed to making a smooth transition that includes Klein.
Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz says the new board should meet today and take immediate action to preserve continuity. Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer also says he'd like to keep things the way they are. But even with a functioning board of education, the mayor has warned there could be litigation over policy and personnel decisions as the system changes. For WNYC I'm Beth Fertig.
