Diocese Of Brooklyn May Close 14 Schools

At least 14 Catholic elementary schools in Brooklyn and Queens could be closed or combined with other schools. The Roman Catholic Diocese of Brooklyn is considering the plan to deal with declining enrollment. Spokesman Father Kieran Harrington says the diocese -- which covers schools in Brooklyn and Queens -- has its own challenges.
KIEREN: We don't have the same sort of wealth as a lot of other diocese. That plays a significant role in our ability to ensure the continued vitality of our schools.
REPORTER: Harrington says many families cannot afford the average tuition for Catholic elementary schools -- which is $3,500 a year. He says the diocese spends $5,500 per pupil.
Bishop Nicholas DiMarzio is expected to decide which schools to close by late next month.
