Council Requires NYPD Weapons Reports

Wednesday, January 07, 2009

The City Council voted unanimously to require the police department to file annual reports about officers' use of their guns. Currently, the New York Police Department voluntarily submits its firearms discharge reports. Under the new legislation, the NYPD would have to break down shootings by precinct and borough, and report the age, race and gender of officers' targets. That data was not included in earlier reports. Mayor Bloomberg is expected to sign the bill.
