Recession Hits City Arts Nonprofits

A new study confirms the city's arts organizations are hurting in this economy as much as everyone else. WNYC's Allison Lichter has more:
REPORTER: The Alliance for the Arts conducted the study and the group's president Randall Bourscheidt, said that one of the surprising results was that arts groups across all five boroughs were impacted, from the performing arts to the visual arts, form the high brow to the downtown and experimental; all have been impacted by the economic downturn.
Five hundred arts groups received the survey and the 96 arts groups that responded, 78 percent have already or plan to cut their budget, 42 percent plan to lay off employees, and over half will delay hiring new staff.
The survey didn't ask where the biggest drop off in funding for the arts came from, but Bourscheidt expects further cuts in city and state funding for the arts, and declining contributions from private foundations. He also said that arts groups should expect what he called a really disastrous decline in corporate support that would last as long as the recession lasts.
