Today in History: 1993 WTC Bombing

Thursday, February 26, 2009

WNYC's Don Mathisen and Madalit del Barco report on the World Trade Center bombing on February 26, 1993:

WTC 1993

The victims of the 1993 World Trade Center bombing are being remembered today. A Mass was held at St. Peter's Church in Lower Manhattan, 16 years to the day after terrorists detonated a truck bomb in an underground parking garage of the trade center. Six people were killed and 1,000 injured.

After the Mass, the victims' families walked over to the Trade Center site where they observed a moment of silence.

A memorial to the 1993 victims was destroyed in the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attack. A recovered fragment of the memorial is displayed at the Mass every year.
