Donovan Says Obama Will Pursue a Progressive Housing Agenda

New US Housing and Urban Development Secretary Shaun Donovan says the Obama administration will push an agenda that goes beyond fixing the current foreclosure crisis. WNYC's Cindy Rodriguez reports.
REPORTER: Donovan, the city's well regarded former housing commissioner, said he wants to change the largely ineffective agency into a leader and innovator in areas such as urban planning. Speaking at an NYU conference, Donovan pointed to the unintended consequences of badly planned housing such as long commutes that create financial burdens on families and high carbon emissions:
DONOVAN: And a whole range of other impacts of the way that we have planned or frankly not planned our metropolitan areas over the last generations must begin to change.
REPORTER: Donovan said the Department of Housing and Urban Development would create an office of sustainability plus begin working with the Departments of Energy and Transportation to better plan cities.
