Record Numbers of Volunteers Feed the Hungry in Park Slope
Friday, December 25, 2009
New York, NY –
It's billed as the largest Christmas-day meal in town -- a hot turkey dinner with fixings and dessert, served at the YMCA in Park Slope. Organizers say they expect 2,000 hungry New Yorkers -- far more than previous years -- but they also saw a record number of volunteers.
Councilman Bill DeBlasio, soon to be Public Advocate, was on hand to serve food. He says that like many others in the neighborhood, he brings his kids.
"A lot of people are hurting now, especially with the economy," DeBlasio says. "And they certainly don't feel loved and cared for on an everyday basis. So this is a moment to try and right that wrong."
In addition to the meals, free toys and clothing are also provided.
