NY Congressman: Final Health Care Bill Must Include Funding for Public Hospitals

Friday, December 25, 2009

Now that both houses of congress have successfully passed their own health care legislation, lawmakers must prepare for one more battle to merge the House and Senate bills.

New York Congressman Eliot Engel sits on the Energy and Commerce Committee, which deals with health care. He says he's disappointed the Senate bill does not include a single-payer plan or a public option, but he says the final bill must include proper funding for the state's public hospitals.

ENGEL: Bottom line for me would be if we're not getting a public option, that New York at least gets the funding that we need and the funding that we deserve.

REPORTER: Governor Paterson is already withholding state health care funding at least through the end of the year. Engel says New York's Public Hospitals are the leading provider of health care to the uninsured and under-insured.
