Judge Ends Federal Monitoring of NYC Water and Sewage Systems

New York, NY –
Mayor Michael Bloomberg made a Christmas morning announcement that the New York City Department of Environmental Protection will emerge from eight years of federal oversight.
The mayor paid a visit to the Newtown Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant after a federal judge this week ruled the DEP has made enough improvements for the oversight to conclude at the end of this month.
Federal monitoring of the city's DEP began in 2001, when federal investigators said workers were disregarding environmental laws and endangering the safety of the city's water supply.
Since then, the city has spent $160 million to overhaul the agency's policies and workplace conditions.
Bloomberg sought to assure New Yorkers they can continue to enjoy what he called the best drinking water in the country.
