Political Showdown Over NYC Tap Water

There's a showdown brewing between City Hall and Albany over tap water. WNYC's Ilya Marritz explains.
REPORTER: In September, state regulators offered a plan for natural gas drilling that included the area near New York City's reservoirs. The Bloomberg administration didn't say much - until yesterday - when it called for the 800-page plan to be dropped.
Steven Lawitts is Acting Commissioner of the City Department of Environmental Protection. He says water contamination is too big a risk.
LAWITTS: under the current science and technology gas drilling in the watershed is unacceptable and must be prohibited.
REPORTER: Governor Paterson says he's aware of the City's position, and will give it consideration. The comment period on Albany's gas drilling plan ends next Thursday. For WNYC, I'm Ilya Marritz.
