NYC Firefighters Deliver for Citymeals on Wheels
Thursday, December 24, 2009
New York, NY –
City firefighters joined with Citymeals on Wheels to deliver lunches to the homebound elderly on the Upper East Side today. Bearing meals and flowers, three firefighters in full uniform made their way up to the 102nd Street apartment of 82-year-old Mamie Williams and her 100-year-old mother.
According to Beth Shapiro of Citymeals on Wheels, the city's senior population is growing, and increasingly feeling the effects of the recession.
"If people can't get out, and they don't have the wherewithal, they're stretching those [meals]," Shapiro says. "So today was lasagna and a sandwich. The sandwich may be dinner, and not part of lunch, or they may cut the bread in half and save a fruit to extend a meal. It gets scary."
Citymeals on Wheels delivers 17,000 meals a day to homebound seniors and will deliver an additional 8,000 tomorrow.
