Pressure is on to Remove Monserrate from Senate

Saturday, December 05, 2009

Queens Senator Hiram Monserrate has received probation for assaulting his girlfriend.

REPORTER: He won't serve jail time for the misdemeanor. Instead, he's been sentenced to 250 hours of community service and domestic abuse counseling. The head of New York's National Organization of Women, Sonja Ossorio says the pressure is on for him to be removed from the Senate.

OSSORIO: It's going to be very very tough, you know, for his colleagues to give him a pass on this and they're hearing from a lot of people from the community who are really outraged that he would remain as a leader.

REPORTER: A spokesman for the Senate Majority Conference says the committee will continue to conduct a review of the facts, past precedent, and the law before making any recommendations about Monserrate's future.
