NJ Assistant U.S. Attorney Michele Brown Resigns

Tuesday, August 25, 2009

New Jersey's number two federal prosecutor has resigned, amid a scandal over a loan she received from the state's Republican candidate for Governor.

First Assistant U.S. Attorney Michele Brown found herself at the center of political controversy when it was disclosed that her former boss, GOP Gubernatorial hopeful Chris Christie, had given her a $46,000 loan in 2007 when Christie was the U.S. Attorney.

In her letter of resignation, Brown said she did not want to become a distraction for the office.

Christie has been under fire because he failed to disclose the loan on his income taxes and other forms as required. Christie said he and his wife extended the second mortgage to Brown because her husband had lost his job.

Brown had been with the Department of Justice for 18 years. In addition to being colleagues, Brown and Christie are neighbors and close friends.
