New Public Art Aims to Beautify Downtown

Monday, August 17, 2009

Some less than attractive downtown spaces are being spruced up thanks to a public art program. The initiative called "Re: Construction" covers concrete barriers, chain link fences and other eyesores with colorful art installations featuring flowing fabric or murals of flying animals and lush landscapes.

Liz Berger with The Alliance for Downtown New York says the program will be transforming 30 different sites over three years:

BERGER: This project is about reducing the chaos and making downtown a warmer and more hospitable place.

REPORTER: Installations are already up at four downtown locations - including Hudson River Park. The Lower Manhattan Development Corporation donated a million and half dollars for the construction beautification project.
