Congressman Weiner Stumps for Single Payer
Monday, August 03, 2009
New York, NY –
Congressman Anthony Weiner is back in his district for the summer recess, stumping for his health care proposal to create a single-payer system, run by the federal government.
REPORTER: Speaking on WNYC's Brian Lehrer show, Weiner says single-payer would not mean a loss of choice when it comes to choosing a doctor.
WEINER: All of us have one payer. It’s just whether we give the money to our insurance company, who gives it back to us when we’re sick, or we give it to the government in the form of Medicare. So it doesn’t change the amount of choice you would have.
REPORTER: Weiner says having the federal government pay for all health care expenses would reduce administrative waste, and save money.
Yesterday, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said she would allow a floor vote later this year on Weiner's proposal.
