Unhinged Bronx Teacher Makes Bomb Threat

Friday, April 24, 2009

A Bronx middle school teacher who threatened to blow up a bomb in a classroom this morning is now in police custody, after undergoing a medical evaluation at Lincoln Memorial Hospital. The NYPD says he will be arrested, but it's not clear what charges the 28-year veteran teacher might face. Francisco Garabitos was taken away from the school this morning after negotiating with the NYPD and a teachers union representative. He did not have a bomb. But he did have a disciplinary record, and he was supposed to be reassigned today to the Departnebnt of Education's so called ribber room while waiting for the outcome of a disciplinary proceeding.

WNYC's Beth Fertig speaks with Amy Eddings about the latest developments.
