Home Depot Opens in the Bronx

Thursday, April 23, 2009

A new Home Depot opened in the Bronx today and the borough's new president-elect, Ruben Diaz Jr., was there to take a look. The big box store is part of the Gateway Center mall, which replaced the old Bronx Terminal Market and the Bronx House of Detention. Diaz says the change is for the best.

DIAZ: We had individuals who were housed here who had no future, with the Bronx House. And now here at Gateway - now here today - with Home Depot, it's a promising future for the great borough of the Bronx and that should be applauded.

The Home Depot is generating 200 of the 2100 jobs at the mall, which will eventually include a BJ's and a Bed Bath and Beyond. Mayor Bloomberg says the development represents the "renaissance" of the South Bronx.
