Some students and administrators are protesting next fiscal year's proposed budget for SUNY schools. Shirley Strum Kenny, the president of SUNY Stony Brook, is angry that diminishing state aid will effectively offset revenue from recent tuition hikes.

KENNY: It is being hijacked to go into the state budget deficit. The students are paying tuition, but it's not coming to their universities.

Governor Paterson's budget office says total funding for SUNY schools will increase 2.7 percent under the proposed state budget, to $2.4 billion. But SUNY disputes that number, and says funding for the state university system will actually decline slightly.
