Brooklyn Community Leaders React to Taser Death

Protestors gather outside the building where mentally ill man died

Thursday, September 25, 2008

State Sen. Eric Adams is a frequent critic of the NYPD.

He says it's one thing to discipline individual police officers but the problem of how to interact with the mentally ill is system-wide.

ADAMS: We don't have an effective policy in the city and state of New York of how to deal with the large number of men and women who are no longer institutionalized.

REPORTER: He says too many people with mental illness are living at home when they need professional supervision.

This is the second case of a person with mental illness killed in a confrontation with police since last November.
