To increase public recycling, the city is adding more than a hundred new recycling bins around the five boroughs.
Citywide, about a third of trash is recycled, but residential recycling is only at about 16 percent.
DOHERTY: And that's an area we have to work on. We've put out a lot of advertisement and outreach but people still aren't recycling.
REPORTER: That's Sanitation Commissioner John Doherty. He hopes the colorful ads on the side of the new bins will help educate people about what's trash and what's recyclable.
Mayor Bloomberg says the expanded program will have virtually no impact on the city's budget.
