Council Speaker Quinn is OK With Changing Term Limit Law
Thursday, October 02, 2008
New York, NY –
Mayor Bloomberg is introducing a bill in the City Council to extend term limits for another four years. He announced his intentions during a packed news conference in the City Hall Blue Room today.
If passed, the measure would also extend the terms of city council members. Speaker Christine Quinn says she has no problem with an effort to rewrite the term limits law, without input of voters through a referendum.
QUINN: Changing term limits legislatively is a power the city council has and a power that if we decide to use it is appropriate to use if that's the dec we make, so I don't believe this can only be re-decided by the voters.
REPORTER: Speaker Quinn says she's never supported term limits, but will take an official position on going from 2 to 3 terms early next week, after she's had time to caucus with other council Democrats.
