A plan to create a statewide registry of home health aides has won legislative approval in Albany . WNYC’s Fred Mogul has more.
REPORTER: They’re one of the fastest growing labor markets in the service economy. But the home health industry in New York has also been rife with falsified credentials and fraudulent billing.
Attorney General Andrew Cuomo and legislative leaders believe an internet-based registry will help consumers and families find out more about the people coming into their homes to help them.
Database information would include employment history, criminal background checks, and certifications – signed under penalty of perjury – from school officials confirming that the aides completed the required training. Governor Paterson’s office says he is reviewing the legislation.
