Out, Out, Outdoor Macbeth

Friday, June 20, 2008

An outdoor production of Shakespeare’s Macbeth is underway in Dumbo. It's a production by TR Warszawa: an innovative theater company from Poland. It’s been imported wholesale by St. Ann’s Warehouse, and is performed in Polish with English supertitles. Audience members sit in a specially constructed theater. Everyone wears headphones, both to blur out the sound of traffic going over the bridge above them and to hear the production’s rich score. Macbeth 2008 opens with a scene that resembles modern day warfare and the production takes some liberties with the text, adding zippy, modern dialogue and cutting away at Shakespeare’s script. Macbeth runs through next Sunday at the Tobacco Warehouse, across from St. Ann’s Warehouse in Dumbo.
