Latin American Food Carts Set Up at Brooklyn Park
Sunday, July 20, 2008
New York, NY –
The Latin food vendors are back at Red Hook Park in Brooklyn.
After months of trying to meet Health Department regulations and coming up with thousands of dollars to buy food trucks and equipment, six vendors returned over the weekend. Four more vendors are expected to join them this week if they pass inspection.
Before city officials shut them down, more than a dozen vendors had set up every weekend at the park during the warm months.
Their return was met with mixed reaction. Some who've been supporting the vendors for years say the city's intervention had "ripped the soul" out of the fiesta-like tradition, turning into just another city-controlled event. But others, including elected and parks officials, call the return of the vendors a victory.
