NY Philharmonic's Concert to be Broadcast on North Korean TV

Monday, February 25, 2008

The New York Philharmonic's upcoming concert in North Korea will be broadcast on North Korean television.

REPORTER: Yesterday, the orchestra announced that the concert may be broadcast on North Korean radio as well, reaching a much larger percentage of the population.

John Schaefer is the host of WNYC's Soundcheck. He's travelling with the orchestra. Schaefer says the philharmonic was politically sensitive when it picked its program for the historic event.

SCHAEFER: The philharmonic came up with a program that suits their needs but also is sensitive of the needs of the government, in terms of not playing anything that's too rabble-rousing.

REPORTER: The philharmonic will perform George Gershiwn's An American in Paris and Dvorak's Symphony Number 9 at its concert in Pyongyang tomorrow.

WNYC will broadcast the concert at 8PM Tuesday on 93.9 FM.
