Sean Bell Supporters Gather on Eve of Trial

Sunday, February 24, 2008

Three New York City police detectives involved in the Sean Bell shooting go on trial Monday. Bell's family and the two survivors of the shooting are gathering on the eve of the trial. They'll join Bell's fiancee and the Reverend Al Sharpton at a brunch today. They also intend to join a vigil outside the Queens Criminal Courthouse tomorrow before the trial begins.

Sean Bell died in a hail of 50 police bullets on what was supposed to be his wedding day in November 2006. Police opened fire as Bell and his friends were leaving a strip club. The detectives say they thought someone in the group was going to get a gun, but no weapon was found.

Prosecutors and defense attorneys have declined to comment in the days leading up to the trial.
