The plans to cut nearly $900 million from the state education budget over the next two years clearly has advocates worried.
They argue that school programs should not be cut at the same rate as other agencies when Governor Paterson tries to shave more than $5 billion from state spending.
Leonie Haimson of the group Class Size Matters says schools should be protected, especially since the state recently agreed to increase funding:
HAIMSON: I think that the promise was not that if times were good we would improve funding for our schools, it was that we would improve funding for our schools, period.
REPORTER: Paterson has proposed decreasing the rate of education spending but argues that aid would still increase five percent next year.
